A Typical Day on Star
Your morning begins with the smell of fresh sea air and the sound of the gulls or, if you are a sound sleeper, with the sweet “music” of the wake-up singers. If you’re a swimmer, you might want to join the Polar Bears for a morning dip at 7:00 a.m. It’s so refreshing, participants are awarded a special certificate at the end of the week! Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are served on the porch at Oceanic long before 8:00 a.m. breakfast. The rocking chairs are an early beckon to quietly watch the day begin. A walk around the island might be your preference, or yoga — whatever feels right.
Children’s and youth programming begins at 8:50, with the younger ages beginning in their own morning Chapel service. Parents have time to get them settled before the theme speaker begins for adults at 9:00 in Elliott, just off the porch.
A stimulating hour with the theme speaker leads into morning workshops, from 10-12. Locations for the various offerings are posted in Elliott so that you can figure out where to go! The gentle rhythm and soft sounds of community become familiar sooner than later.
The lunch bell rings to announce the noon meal, served family-style in the dining hall, refreshing everyone for afternoon activities. Lunch is a chance to re-connect with your kids and plan your afternoon. There is a one-hour Island Quiet Time observed from 1:00-2:00, before baseball games, art-barn, swimming, Island wandering, porch chats, afternoon workshops, or a good long nap — your choice!
Social time is at 5:00, hopefully outside watching the sun continue its summer stretch across the ocean. Look west to the mainland, or east to the horizon — it’s all stunning in its simplicity and charm.
Dinner at 6:00 is often followed by optional activities like the bonfire, or Billy’s ever-so-famous Sock-Hop, or the Tuesday night Musicale and the Wednesday night Talent Show. Maybe, though, you’re just as happy with a lime-rickey and a rocker on the porch, watching the sun set.
The day ends (for most of us) with evening chapel services. Walking in silence up the path to the chapel, carrying your lantern is really one of the special, spiritual moments on Star. If you still have energy at 11 p.m. and beyond, there are late-night social gatherings for grown-ups and raucous games of spoons — featuring outrageous and flagrant cheating — for the young at heart.
R.E. Week on Star Island has something for everyone, family time, quiet time, time to build your skills as a lay or professional religious educator, time to reflect and recharge, and time to relax and have fun. Most of all, it is a chance to be a part of an extraordinary, warm and nurturing U.U. community. We hope you’ll join us.
The Silent Auction
Please Support the Silent Auction!
This year, as in past years, there will be a silent auction during the RE Conference at Star Island to help support the RE Scholarship Fund. Please bring something nice with you to donate to the auction (UU-related items and items with stars on them are very popular, but anything really cool and desirable is appreciated — new or gently used terrific t-shirts sell well also!)
Auction donations will be collected early in the week on the island and will be on display in Newton Center all week for your bidding pleasure. The auction will close on Thursday at 6 p.m. during Social Hour before dinner.
Only cash or checks can be accepted as payment for auction purchases.
If you would like to help with the auction by checking in donations, displaying them, or assisting at closing, contact Marilyn and George Collins at george_collins@rresp.com.
We look forward to seeing you on Star!
