About Us
The tradition of summer conferences on Star Island began with a gathering of religious educators from the Unitarian tradition in 1916. Religious Education Conferences have been available each summer on the Island ever since, providing a rich history of professional, leadership and lay opportunities.
Today, the Religious Education Conference is a working conference for new and longtime professional religious educators and volunteers in the Unitarian Universalist tradition, providing a rich variety of educational and spiritual opportunities in a nurturing, inclusive lifespan community. Conference leadership and staffing are provided by volunteers, and conference themes and workshops are chosen yearly from subjects of interest to religious educators.
A volunteer Executive Staff, drawn primarily from the professional religious education community and under the leadership of a Conference Dean, is responsible for planning and conducting the yearly conference Continuity and oversight from year to year are provided by a Governance Board, consisting of the current and four past Conference Deans, plus a member-at-large. The Governance Board establishes and monitors the general policies of the Religious Education Conference, including those addressing financial matters, staffing, registration and safety guidelines, and is also responsible for the ongoing relationship with the Star Island Corporation and Conference Center.
Members of the 2006 Executive Staff include:
Anne Bancroft, Dean
Ruth Owen, Special Events/Incoming Dean
Laura Beth Brown, Young People’s Dean

There are many leadership and staffing opportunities with the Religious Education Conference for those interested in religious education and conference planning — and those drawn to an exciting, energetic and creative community.
